St Andrews Free Walking Tour Heading East
Your free sightseeing walking tour starts with the 18th green and 1st tee of the Old Course. This is followed by a leafy walk to St Andrews University – St Salvator’s College and the Bishop’s Palace.
It’s then onto the Cathedral grounds, and in the neighbouring priory precincts, where you will visit the lesser known school of St Leonards. Plus Mary Queen of Scots former residence – Queen Mary’s House. We then head along medieval South Street – St Andrews main street.
St Andrews Free Walking Tour Heading West
On South Street you will also see the former headquarters of the Knights Templar in Scotland, the beautiful precincts of St Mary’s College and historic Holy Trinity Church, marking the centre of St Andrews town.
The tour finishes nearby in the heart of the town beside the Central Bar in Market Street where your guide can make recommendations:
From quirky shops and restaurants to award-winning fish and chip shops, cafes and great Scottish bars. All in the vicinity of your tour finishing point.

So how does a free walking tour work?
Free walking tours are very popular across the world
If you don’t know how the free tour model works, at the end of your tour you will have the opportunity to give your guide a voluntary amount based on what you think your tour was worth.
It is why the standard of free tours is always very high and why they are so popular.
How much should I tip?
The average amount per person is between £10 and £20, but remember it is a voluntary gratuity, so it is all about how much you feel your tour was worth and importantly how much you can afford, which brings in the budget appeal.
If you are on a tight budget you can pay less or indeed, being voluntary there is never any mandatory obligation to pay anything, so these tours suit all budgets.
A voluntary payment to your guide can be made by cash or card at the end of your tour and is always gratefully received.
